Eight Men Out - Captains Announced For This Week's Game
August 27, 2013 8:00 PM

And so it begins : Tonight coach Meyer announced 8 game captains for this week's game against Buffalo.

Congratulations to C.J. Barnett, Corey "Philly" Brown, Christian Bryant, Kenny Guiton, Corey Linsley, Jack Mewhort, Braxton Miller and Ryan Shazier.  They have the honor being captain for at least the first week of the season, but the list will be cut back by the end of the season.

Date With Hokies Changed
August 26, 2013 10:00 PM

Ohio State's game against Virginia Tech’s in Lane Stadium in 2015 will take place on Labor Day night, Hokies athletic director Jim Weaver said on the Tech Talk this evening. Originally planned for September 19th that year will now be played on Monday, September 7 as part of the ACC”s television deal with ESPN to play games on Labor Day night.

Another DB In Trouble
August 10, 2013 6:30 PM

No final word yet on Bradley Roby's status, but the Buckeyes will be one less DB for the team photo Sunday.

Buckeye 50 sources indicated defensive back Najee Murray has been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. Some Internet sites say he may already looking to transfer to Louisville.  After all, the conference formally known as the Big East will take any and all players with no discrimination.

Najee Murray contributed last year as a true freshman, until a knee injury and subsequent surgery ended his season. Before his injury, Murray had played in the first six games for the Buckeyes and had made three solo tackles on special teams. His playing time totaled 74 plays in those six games including six plays as a cornerback in the season opener against Miami.

Not expected to be a starter, this will effect the two-deep.

Congratulations Ben
August 4, 2013 10:00 PM

With all the negative press that fills the news circles it is nice to report a positive story.  Of course you will not see this on ESPN Sportscenter, even though it is the version of putting the 'student' in the title student-athlete'

Former OSU punter Ben Buchanan wore cap and gown for the second time at The Ohio State University today, this time earning his master's degree in sports administration. While studying at OSU, he was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree, earned a bachelor's degree in strategic communications, was a two-time finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is presented to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement, and was a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete,

On the field, Ben was a four-year letterman, finishing his Ohio State career ranking fourth all-time in school history in punts (177) and yards (7,286), and his 41.2 career average ranks eighth in school history. His career totals also include 58 punts downed inside the 20 and 68 fair caught, he punted in 39 games and had a single-game best average of 50.0 vs. Indiana in 2010.

Buckeyes #2 In Pre-Season Coaches Poll
August 1, 2013 1:00 PM

After a year absence due to the football program's suspension from the NCAA, Ohio State returns to the Coaches poll ranked #2 behind defending champion Alabama.  No surprise to see the Crimson Tide on top, but the Buckeyes actually got 3 of the first place votes which should shock a few, including Mark May.  We will see how that evolves as the season develops.  One thing for sure, they go undefeated, it has got to be a good thing, and a great chance to play for the national championship.

One other item of note in review of the opening poll.  The Big Ten seems to be suffering from a negative image as a weak conference, yet 5 teams in the Big Ten can be found in the opening poll.  With 6 teams from the SEC present, almost half of the teams come from those two conferences.

Hyde Suspended For 3 Games
July 31, 2013 7:00 AM

At least for now, the Buckeyes know they will be without their starting running back for three games.  Carlos Hyde was suspended for at least three games and will be required to meet additional obligations before he plays again.  This is the current result after being named a person of interest in an investigation into an alleged assault of a woman at a downtown Columbus bar. Police have now said the case had been dropped.

Urban Meyer then announced Hyde’s punishment ‘‘for conduct not representative of this football program or this university.’’ There was no word in the release on what Meyer meant by the ‘‘additional obligations’’ that Hyde would have to complete before he was allowed to play in another game.

Although OSU should be able to win without Hyde, it may reduce his chance to become the first 1,000 yard rusher for Meyer.  He scored 17 touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record last fall. He gained 970 yards on 185 carries.

Ohio State opens its fall camp on Sunday.

Meyer Punishes Entire Team For Baugh's Arrest
July 17, 2013 9:45 PM

For the past couple of days all of us have been hearing the details around the troubles for incoming freshman tight end Marcus Baugh. He was arrested on charges of underage consumption and carrying a fake identification. This was after the police had let him off on a warning, walked him back to his room, but he left again and was found later by the same policeman.

The question in these situations is usually how the coach will punish the player.  Urban Meyer decided a different approach. This arrest did not make him very happy.  So Meyer took his anger out on the entire team in summer workouts yesterday: Mickey Marotti made team run 24 55-yd. sprints, back to back. This is the twice the normal amount.

I am sure Baugh’s teammates will remember this and hopefully the message will be clear that this off the field behavior will not be tolerated.

July 11, 2013 5:00 PM

The Big Ten released schedules for 2016 and 2017, the first two years of the nine-game conference slates.  The first thing everyone will want to look at is who in the West division (remember, no Leaders and Legends anymore) will OSU play and where.  With the new schedule, there will always be a lack of balance in the schedules.  So for the division crossover games, this is how things look for 2016 and 2017.  All East Division teams will play five conference home games in 2016, while the West Division teams will play five at home in '17.

Happy Birthday Urban!
July 10, 2013 5:00 PM

Today coach Urban Meyer turns 49. On behalf of all of Buckeye Nation, enjoy the day and celebrate well.  There would be no better birthday gift then for him to win his 3rd National Championship before he turns 50.

Other people sharing a birthday on July 10th include David Brinkley, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Simpson, Jack Lamotta and Andre Dawson.  Other individuals who were also born in 1964 include Stone Cold Steve Austin, Barry Bonds, Teri Hatcher, Rob Lowe, Michelle Obama, Keanu Reeves, Sarah Palin and Joss Whedon.

OSU LB Transfers to Harvard
July 2, 2013 9:00 PM

Before long, OSU may need to switch to a 5-2 front on defense, as the number of linebackers on the roster remains low.  Today it just got lower.

Sophomore Luke Roberts, who asked permission to pursue other schools this spring, has decided to transfer to Harvard.  Roberts will remain a student at OSU but will not be on the team through Fall Semester at OSU and will leave OSU before Winter/Spring semester in order to preserve his three remaining years of football eligibility.

He was the latest in a line of Lancaster linebackers; former Buckeye Bobby Carpenter and current N.C. State linebacker Ryan Cheek are each from the area. Roberts enrolled at Ohio State for the 2012 spring quarter, was rated the #28 inside linebacker prospect in the nation by Scout.com and the #44 linebacker prospect by ESPNU. He was named second-team Division I all-state by the Associated Press as a senior after recording 118 tackles, including 19 tackles-for-loss and five quarterback sacks for the Gales squad.

Earlier this year, after the spring game, David Perkins made his announcement to transfer from OSU.

Ohio State and Hawaii Talk Schedules
July 1, 2013 4:45 PM

OSU and Hawaii have never faced each other on the football field.  That fact could change in the next few years and Hawaii is willing to travel.

The Rainbow Warriors are seeking to play future road games against UCLA and Ohio State. One of the many draws for such a match is the venues, UCLA plays at the Rose Bowl while Ohio State enjoys home field at "The Horseshoe".  If the Warriors need to go on the road to fill dates, those two would be among the most worthwhile.  Another bonus would be the seven figure payout and national television exposure.

There is no word on any specifics at this point other than to say the talks are going fairly well, and also that these will be road games only. There could possibly be a two-for-one opportunity, but all current indications is there would be no return game.  Sorry Buckeye fans who were dreaming of a road trip to the 50th state.

One connection between the schools the fact that Hawaii’s new athletic director is Ben Jay, a former associate athletic director at Ohio State. Another is the fact that the Rainbow Warriors traveled to Gainesville in 2008 and faced-off against Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators.

Herbie Predicts OSU To Play In Pasadena
June 25, 2013 8:30 PM

Within the same week Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner boldly projected a victory over the Buckeyes this coming season, former OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit took the opportunity to make a bold prediction of his own.

The ESPN analyst told a crowd at the Greater Columbus Sports Commission’s yearly town hall meeting that the Buckeyes were going to win the Big Ten championship – and possibly reach the national title game: “Make your reservations because we are going to Pasadena,” Herbstreit said.

Ohio State would accomplish this by either winning the Big Ten Championship and earning a trip to the Rose Bowl or finishing #1 or #2 in the BCS and playing for the BCS National Championship Game, which also takes place at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

Either way, OSU’s bid for the Rose Bowl or the national championship will require one or two wins over the Wolverines.

Michigan Removed From 2016 Football Schedule
June 19, 2013 5:00 PM

Ohio State confirmed the football team has canceled its scheduled 2016 game against Central Michigan.  A letter was sent to CMU to inform them OSU was no longer planning the game scheduled for September 24 at Ohio Stadium.  This is the first year the B1G goes to a nine game conference schedule.

The Buckeyes’ first three games of the 2016 season will remain home contests against Bowling Green and Tulsa, followed by a road trip to Norman to take on the Sooners.  It is likely the Buckeyes saved the BGSU game as that was the school Urban Meyer began his head coaching care

2014 Big Ten Schedule Announced
May 16, 2013 5:45 PM

The Big Ten Conference announced the 2014 schedules today. The Buckeyes will get to be the first to play both Rutgers and Maryland as they enter the conference. And yes, the Michigan will still be at the end of the season just as it should be. In 2014 and 2015, each team will play every other team within its division plus two teams from the opposite division. Then in 2016 when the nine-game schedule begins, each team will play every other team within its division plus three teams from the opposite division. The only cross-division protected rivalry will be Indiana-Purdue.

New Bowl Game Planned for the Big Ten
May 15, 2013 9:30 PM

A new California bowl for Big Ten is in the works. The Holiday Bowl, played in San Diego since 1978, will feature the Big Ten against a Pac-12 opponent after the 2013 season.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported Tuesday that the Holiday Bowl and Big Ten are close to finishing a six-year agreement set to begin with the 2014 season. According to the report, the deal gives the Holiday Bowl the third pick in the Big Ten bowl lineup after the playoff and access bowls make their selections.

The Dallas Morning News also reported this week that the Big 12's relationship with the Holiday Bowl is expected to end after the 2013 game, stating the bowl is "likely to broker a Big Ten matchup with the Pac-12."
