Spring fever, Spring is here at last
Spring fever, my heart's beating fast

Happy 80th Birthday For Hopalong
March 2, 2014 6:00 AM
The oldest living OSU Heisman winner, Howard 'Hopalong' Cassidy turns 80 today. You can see him from time to time out in the public doing autograph signings. Cassady played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1952-55. During his college career, he scored 37 touchdowns in 36 games, playing tailback and defensive back. He was twice selected as a consensus All-American, in 1954 and 1955. In 1954 the Buckeyes finished the season 10-0 and won a consensus national championship. In 1955, Cassady won the Heisman Trophy by the largest margin at the time), the Maxwell Award, and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year.
He earned the nickname "Hopalong" during his first game as a freshman for Ohio State. Columbus sportswriters who saw him play said he "hopped all over the field like the performing cowboy," a reference to the fictional character Hopalong Cassidy. In that game Cassady came off the bench to score three touchdowns in a win over Indiana University.
Cassady also played baseball for Ohio State. He led the team in home runs in 1955 and in stolen bases in 1956.
Mike Mitchell To Transfer
February 10, 2014 7:15 PM
As a friend of Buckeye50 suggested as far back as the Clemson game, today Bucknuts confirmed. Mike Mitchell a 5-start recruit just last season, was going to be a much needed addition to the linebacking group. Now he is going to be just the latest casualty at the position. Reports are he is making the move, in large part be closer to his family in TX. His father is currently battling a serious illness. Although this is not official yet, it appears he will finish the current semester and then transfer.
Mitchell would be 7th linebacker to transfer out of the 17 who signed with Ohio State between 2009-13.
If Mitchell does leave, that will put more focus on Raekwon McMillan, a 5-star inside linebacker from Hinesville, Ga. McMillan enrolled early to take part in spring practice. That move now may really translate into more playing time in 2014.
Bucknuts also reported it is likely hearing that Mike's brother Mickey, a 2015 OSU basketball commit, will probably stay closer to home as well, meaning that Thad Matta will have to replace one of the top juniors in the country in his next class.
Best of luck to you Mike, to your family and your future.

February 2, 2014 10:00 PM
Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos is the first Super Bowl since 1998 that will not include a Buckeye on at least one of the teams. OSU 4th Most Valuable College Team
January 19, 2014 8:00 PM
The Wall Street Journal has released their list of the 50 most valuable college football programs in the country. Not so surprisingly, the Texas Longhorns program is on top the list with a value of $875 million. To put it in perspective, the Cincinnati Bengals were valued by Forbes at $871 million, $4 million less than Texas. Behind Texas was Notre Dame with a value of $811.5 million. There was a big gap between those two and third place Michigan Wolverines, who came in at $685 million. Ohio State hits the charts next with a value of $673 million. Look for another hike in ticket prices this season to help close that gap.
Eleven of the current twelve B1G schools appear in the list's top 50. Iowa comes in at 11th, Nebraska 12th, Wisconsin 13th, Penn State 14th, Michigan State 29th, Minnesota 36th, Northwestern 40th, Indiana 46th, and Purdue 48th.
Vrabel Moving To the NFL
January 9, 2014 6:30 PM
We knew there may be changes to for OSU coaching staff, and today they lost their second defensive coach.
Defensive line coach Mike Vrabel will be joining newly hired Bill O'Brien in Houston. He is leaving to become the linebackers coach for the Houston Texans. The rumors had swirled during the late afternoon but Vrabel confirmed it with his own tweet:
I am thankful for everyone assoc with OSU for 3 great years and my family and I are excited to join the Houston Texans as the LB coach.
Ohio State was Vrabel's first college coaching job. Newly hired Texans coach Bill O'Brien was an assistant with the Patriots during Vrabel's playing days where they won three Super Bowls. Vrabel is the second defensive assistant to leave the Buckeyes this offseason. Co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers left last month to take the head coaching job at James Madison.
