KEYS TO A VICTORY

.We must defend against screen plays (especially those in the flat) MUCH better than most of this year.  NW really hurt us with these plays.  If not fixed, TBGUN will kill us with these plays.  This type of play hurt us all year.  At one point I thought we had it fixed pretty well, but NW showed us how to execute these plays last Sat.  And, we know that Michigan loves to run this play.  If we effectively take it out of their arsenal, it will hurt them significantly.

..Blitz and pressure while OSU is on defense.  Chad Henne has a history of folding like a card table under pressure.  If nothing more, he WILL pick us apart if given enough time.  I think this element is one of the CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS for us Saturday.

.When OSU is on offense, we must stretch the field vertically. We can’t allow them to bunch up on the line, PLUS their DB’s are very suspect.  We also know this helps the running game.

.Stay with creative, aggressive play calling all day until the end of the game.  This will be another CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR FOR US.  Michigan looks for tendencies.  If we give them reason to predict the play calling, it WILL be a rough day for us.  Our RB’s will not be successful running against them if they have 7+ in the box.  Their front 7 is THAT good this year.  We need to run more sweeps, counter treys and passes to the backs.

.Play smart on special teams, and no special team turnovers.   Few things give a team more of a lift faster than recovering a fumble on a punt or kick off.  This is mostly mental, so we should be prepared.

.Let Troy run loose. He has been kept “somewhat” under wraps this season.  I hope it was a rouse to let TBGUN think that he has evolved into a QB who really looks to mostly pass.

.How will Michigan DB’s strategically play our WR’s? Look for this to be a key factor.  The question really is, “Will TBGUN try to stuff our wideouts at the line of scrimmage, or will they try to stay back with zone or deep man coverage?  They kind of like to bump the wideouts, but many feel if they do, only Leon Hall can effectively execute man coverage.  On the other hand, Troy is now savvy enough to pick zones apart.  This will be VERY interesting to watch.

.How will our offensive line deal with their excellent defensive line?  I think this is another CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR FOR OSU.  Troy must be allowed the time to do his thing.   Plus, we need to find an effective answer for Lamar Woodley and others up front.  Do you double team Woodley, or try to take him one on one?  Don’t know, but do know this will be a big factor Saturday.

Well, there you have it, the elements I think will factor very heavily in determining the outcome this Saturday.  3:30 PM, Saturday November 18, 2006, Columbus, Ohio – THE ULTIMATE GAME.
