Ohio State vs. Nebraska Preview
Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers 4-1
October 8, 2011
8:00 pm - ABC
Memorial Stadium
Lincoln, Nebraska
The Drama: Pathetic
There isn’t much more to say than what and how the Ohio State Buckeyes said it on the field last Saturday. While the defense is holding its own, the offense, especially the offensive line, is simply putrid. Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Jim Bollman has shown he can’t do it without Jim Tressel and as bad as Bollman is, I wonder why Tress had him on staff at all. Thanks to the ineptitude of Jim Bollman, Luke Fickel has no shot as retaining the head coaching job and has guaranteed that there will be a clean sweep of the coaching staff in the off season. The best thing about hitting rock bottom is that the only direction to go is up. Someone will punch me for that stupid line.
The Buckeyes will win because: Nebraska won’t show up
The Buckeye offense is so bad that the only chance they have of winning this one is if the Huskers take the day off, literally. I thought it couldn’t get worse than the Miami (FL) game and MAN was I wrong. It got worse and has the potential to get much much worse.
The Buckeyes will lose because: Nebraska shows up
Despite the whooping Nebraska took from Wisconsin, the Huskers are a darn good team. Their strength is in the running game as Rex Burkhead leads all rushers with 516 yards and 8 touchdowns. The one shining hope for a Buckeye victory is that the Buckeye defense is very good against the run and If OSU can…never mind…I can only be just so optimistic.
The Husker spotlight is on: QB Taylor Martinez
Martinez was cut from the same mold as Husker great Tim Crouch and has 823 passing yards, 482 rushing yards and a total of 12 touchdowns on the season so far (8 rushing, 4 passing). Ohio State has had issues with mobile quarterbacks in the past and adding that to the heaping pile of stink that is Ohio State this year certainly does not help.
“Cooler” Stat of the game (macho stats for the water cooler): 6 games.
Ohio State is one of only three D-1 schools that have never lost more than six games in a single season.
The Bottom line: Broken
This ship is sinking fast and nothing will stop it until a new coaching staff is put in place. That won’t and shouldn’t happen until after the season is complete so we have a few more months of embarrassment and misery to endure (double that if you’re a Brown’s fan). I hope to see Coach Fickel back at the reigns of the Buckeyes in the future but right now this program needs a shot of new blood that can only come with the hiring of a big named coach. There will be plenty of time to talk about who that might be so until that conversation starts all I can say is with blind optimism, GO BUCKS!
Prediction: Husker-do 41 – Sad Sacks 3
