JUCO Receiver Heading To Columbus
January 30, 2013 1:30 PM

With one week remaining before national signing day, the Buckeye staff continues to work to add quality recruits to their 2013 class.  Their efforts paid off once again as JUCO wide receiver Corey Smith verbally committed to OSU, becoming the 23rd member of the 2013 class. With current scholarship numbers, the Buckeyes should be able to add one more recruit to the class.

Smith is coming out of East Mississippi Community College and had previously given an oral commitment to Mississippi State. He also played one year at Grand Rapids Community College. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at Ohio State. He was in for an official visit a few weeks back, and must have seen something he liked.

Smith went to high school at Akron (OH) Buchtel and committed to Tennessee following his senior season but took the junior college route instead. He caught 51 passes for 733 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2012.

Smith is ranked as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, which ranked him as the overall No. 18 junior college prospect in the country.   He was also ranked the ninth-best JUCO player in the nation by 247Sports.  In addition to Ohio State, he had received offers from Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Penn State from the B1G, as well as several other major universities across the country.

Assuming no other changes occur to the roster by this fall, it may be an OSU record to have 4 Corey’s on the team, adding Smith into the fold with Corey Linley and our duo of Corey Brown’s.

Coaches Still Working Overtime To Get the Best Players
January 23, 2013 5:00 PM

With the loss of Conner Cromwell and Joey O'Conner, add in the current verbal commitments for the 2013 class, that puts the Buckeyes at 80, two under the 82 limit.  This is why they continue their interest in several players, including Kentucky receiver Ryan Timmons. Several recruiting outlets reported Wednesday that Timmons just received his offer from Ohio State.

Former Oregon pledge Dontre Wilson plans to visit Ohio State on January 25 and, according to the Dallas Morning News, will host OSU coaches at his home on Thursday night.

So the Buckeyes are still active, but 82 remains that magic number. The Buckeyes don't have to be there on Signing Day, but they must be able to explain to the Big Ten how they plan and expect to hit that number by the start of fall practice.

Two More Linebackers Commit To Ohio State
January 6, 2013 7:00 AM

After the Army Bowl, six players announce their commitments.  One of them provided an update Ohio State was expecting to hear.  Texas linebacker Mike Mitchell announced his interest in the Buckeyes and will be the most recent addition to their 2013 class.  This comes just one day after Georgia linebacker Trey Johnson also announced his interest in OSU.

Mitchell should compete for playing time immediately, he fits the mold of players the coach Meyer is trying to bring to Columbus. He is athletically gifted with 4.39 speed in the 40 in an outside linebacker's body. He graded out as the best athlete in the nation at a combine in the summer where they measured speed, power and agility in relation to size.  Expect him to play as a true freshman in the fall.

Johnson is one of the best linebackers in the 2013 class.  He has been graded as a quick inside man that sheds blocks well and tracks the ball carrier with consistency.  During his senior season Johnson recorded 139 total tackles, 94 of which were solo, three sacks and one interception. He averaged 13.9 tackles per game.   According to the 247Sports.com Composite rating Johnson is the #3 inside linebacker, the #12 player in Georgia and the #120 player in the country overall.

4-Star Tackle Picks OSU - LB Chooses Notre Dame
December 9, 2012 11:45 PM

According to reports, Cleveland St. Ignatius junior lineman Jimmy Byrne committed this weekend to Brian Kelly and Notre Dame.  Byrne chose the Irish over Ohio State despite receiving the first in-state offer of the 2014 class from Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer last December.

After talking with Kelly Saturday, Byrne confirmed his commitment via Twitter.

“Just got off the phone with Coach Kelly. Committed to the University of Notre Dame! #GoIrish,” he tweeted.  "Notre Dame probably recruited me a little bit harder than Ohio State did,” Byrne said on Saturday. “Each and every time I went to visit Notre Dame, I came away more impressed. Over time it added up to the point where I felt Notre Dame was the best fit for me.”

But the news was not all negative for the Buckeyes.  Just two days after securing a commitment from Gareon ConleyDonovan Munger gave his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes.

Munger is a 4-star defensive tackle from Shaker Heights, Ohio. The 280-pound defensive lineman chose Ohio State over Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, West Virginia and a host of other schools.

Recruited mainly as a defensive tackle, Munger could switch over to offense and play guard if things get too crowded on the defensive line. Munger became the fifth defensive lineman to commit to Ohio State this year, joining Billy PriceTracy SprinkleMichael Hill and Joey Bosa

This group linemen follows the first group Meyer brought in last year that include Se'Von PittmanTommy SchuttAdolphus Washington and 5-star defensive end Noah Spence.   You know how strong the Buckeye defense will be for years to come.

Munger is the 19th commitment in Ohio State's 2013 class.

Michigan Recruit Changes Mind - Now Thinking Scarlet And Gray
December 7, 2012 6:00 PM

OSU is not fortunate enough to go to a bowl this year, so maybe Coach Meyer is using the time to finish up his 2013 recruiting class early.  According to news from Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch, the Buckeyes have secured a commitment from former Michigan pledge Gareon Conley.  Rabinowitz tweets "Massillon Washington CB/WR Gareon Conley has committed to #OSU, his HS coach tells the Dispatch. Was a Michigan commitment until lately.

Recruiting services rank Conley very differently. Rivals.com has him rated the #42 cornerback in the country with a 3-star rating, Scout.com has him rated as the #17 cornerback with a 4-star rating and ESPN rated Conley the highest as the #62 prospect in the entire country with a 4-star rating.

Conley's commitment is big for a couple of reasons.  Aside from filling a team need, he became the first commitment for Ohio State since Tyquan Lewis back in September. Conley is the 18th member of Urban Meyer's 2013 class, and he may have started what could turn into a long list of commitments for the Buckeyes.

The fact that Meyer flipped Conley, who was committed to Michigan just last week, is big as well. Brady Hoke has plucked a few of Ohio's top prospects over the last two years, including Kyle Kalis who flipped from OSU to the Wolverines last year.

Neal Changes His Mind, Looking At Baton Rouge
May 3, 2012 9:45 PM

Coach Bielema is probably grinning from ear to ear.

Lewis Neal, a defensive end and linebacker from Wilson, North Carolina has decommitted from the Ohio State football class of 2013.  Neal had just committed to the Buckeyes a few days ago, but according to his high school coach, he has received an offer from LSU and will take some more time before making his college decision.

Baugh Chooses Buckeyes
April 10, 2012 10:30 PM

Ohio State picked up a big commitment from out west as the 4-star tight end from Riverside, CA J.W North athlete Marcus Baugh announced in favor of the Buckeyes. Baugh is considered one of the top receivers in the region, and is ranked the 7th TE nationally by Scout.com.  At 6’4”, 215 lbs, he is viewed and an incredible athlete with speed at the position.  Other schools that courted him included, Arizona State, California, Florida, Nebraska and Washington.

He becomes the 8th recruit for the Buckeyes for their 2013 class.

Safety Switches From West Virginia to Ohio State
April 2, 2012 4:30 PM

Urban Meyer continues to prove he knows all the buttons to push to get what he wants (and needs).

Where do you think a young kid from Toledo wants to play, Morgantown or Columbus. A personal scholarship offer can change things and that was the case for Toledo defensive back Jayme Thompson, who previously committed to West Virginia but couldn't pass up the opportunity to play for Ohio State once the change came along.

"Just the proximity to home, it's really convenient for my dad to come see me play," Thompson told Rivals. "West Virginia is a great place and they are going to have a lot of success there. They are the pre-season No. 6 team in the nation so I don't look at it like I was leaving a bad place or anything like that, it just really came down to being closer to home and being closer to my dad."

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect committed to the Mountaineers shortly after Signing Day and held offers from other programs such as Notre Dame, Nebraska and Missouri. Thompson's recent trip to Columbus seemed to provide clarity to the recruiting process and make his decision to flip an easy one.

"I enjoyed the visit a lot," he said. "I like Ohio State a lot. It's really nice up there, the facilities are great. Coach (Everett) Withers, my position coach, I ate lunch with him and talked to him about everything. I met with coach Urban Meyer and we talked about where I would fit in and everything like that. Every time coach Withers looked at me (in the meeting) he had a smile on his face. Coach Meyer was really excited and he hugged me and my dad, and everything was really nice."

Elliott Commits To The Buckeyes
April 1, 2012 5:00 PM

The second Meyer recruiting class gets their sixth name.  Ezekiel Elliott, a running back from St. Louis, MO has provided a verbal commitment to the 2013 recruiting class today.  This four-star player is considered one of the top running back prospects in the nation.  This is the second back listed in the class.  Elliott, who is listed at 6' 0", 190 lbs, with 4.5 40 speed, was also offered scholarships at schools including Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Another 4-Star Prospect Looks To OSU
February 13, 2012 7:00 PM

If the start on next year's recruiting class is any indication of things to come, there may not be any talent out there for OSU to try to attract away from other schools next signing day. Already Urban Meyer has been able to get 3 verbal commitments for the 2013 class as defensive tackle Billy Price commits to Ohio State. The Big Ten could be in trouble as the third 4-star prospect verbals.

On Monday, lineman Billy Price (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown-Fitch) committed to Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes three early 2013 commitments. The four-star prospect, who will play defensive tackle at Ohio State, joins four-star safety Cam Burrows and four-star athlete Jalin Marshall in the 2013 class. All three were named among ESPN's top 100 juniors.

At this time Wisconsin has secured one player, an unranked tight end, Coach Bielema should not worry we will steal him away.

Burrows Picks Ohio State
January 19, 2012 5:30 PM

Let the 2013 class begin.

DB prospect Cameron Burrows has given his verbal commitment to new coach Meyer, becoming the first member of Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class.  This 3.7 GPA student-athlete choose the Buckeyes over several major programs, including Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan, UC, Missouri, Colorado, Illinois, Purdue, Kentucky, Stanford, Wisconsin, and Boston College.

Top Ohio Junior Set to Announce College Choice
January 16, 2012 4:00 PM

Cameron Burrows, a 6-2, 195 lb, defensive back from Trotwood-Madison will announce his college choice this Thursday, January 19 at his high School.  Burrows is rated as the #1 overall prospect in Ohio by Rivals.com for 2013 and is deciding between Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Stanford, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.  All signs point to Burrows choosing Ohio State, which would be a huge get for the Buckeyes in kicking off their 2013 recruiting campaign. - BBaver
