Buckeyes Defeat Hawkeyes/Huskers On The Road
October 27, 2012 10:30 pm EST
The #20 Buckeyes gained a three-set sweep (25-17, 26-24, 25-12) over Iowa on the road Saturday night. With the victory, the Buckeyes improved to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in the Big Ten.

Mari Hole and Kaitlyn Leary finished with 14 kills each to lead the squad. Hole added eight digs and two solo blocks for the Buckeye defense.

Mariah Booth finished with 11 kills, and Emily Danks had seven kills and two service aces. Senior Amanda Peterson had a double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs. Juniors Davionna DiSalvatore and Julianne Mandolfo had 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

But that was not the big story this weekend for the volleyball team.

On Friday night, the team upset #4 Nebraska on the road 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-23). It was the team's first win over Nebraska since 1991.

Hoosiers Go Down Quietly
October 12, 2012 9:30 pm EST
Tomorrow night, the football team will take on the Hoosiers, but tonight it was the volleyball team in action. But they have set the standard as the Buckeyes earn the 3-1 victory.

The Hoosiers had not won a conference match yet this season but took powerhouse Nebraska to five sets in their last match.  OSU appeared to have the first game in hand with a 23-21 and serving, but Indiana ran off 4 straight points for the early win.

Fortunately Ohio State bounced back taking the next three games and the match.  All active players saw action with the exception of senior Amanda Petersen in this conference win to take the team to 14-5 overall, 5-2 in the Big Ten.

Buckeyes Upset #10 Dayton
September 7, 2012 8:30 pm EST
After their loss to the Lady Ducks, OSU women's volleyball team unfairly were dropped out of the top 25.  Maybe now they have won their way back into the rankings.

In the first match of the WKU Tournament, Ohio State captured a 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) upset win over #10 Dayton Friday afternoon.  The loss was the first of the year for the Flyers.

Senior Mari Hole finished with a team-high 21 kills and added 10 digs. Senior Mariah Booth tallied a career-high 17 kills, 19.5 points and four blocks. Senior Emily Danks had 12 kills and nine digs, while setter Amanda Peterson finished with six kills and 30 assists.

Defensively, libero Davionna DiSalvatore led the squad with 18 digs and freshman Jillian Bauer totaled a career-best 10 digs. Junior Kaitlyn Leary came off the bench and added seven kills, while sophomore Anna Faul had three block assists.

In the nightcap, the Bucks defeated UIPUI 3-1 (25-9, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16). The win improved Ohio State's record to 7-1, while IUPUI fell to 5-4.

Saturday they will finish their play in the tournament as the do battle with host Western Kentucky.

Great Start For 2012 Season
August 25, 2012 11:00 pm EST
The new season is underway for the women's volleyball team and the opening weekend proved to be a solid start.

After dispatching both Houston and Toledo 3-0, the Bucks started 2-0 against #20 Oregon,  only to see the Ducks rally to win the last three sets and take the match.

The 2012 campaign saw Coach Carlston fifth season at the helm of the OSU squad begin with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) over the Houston Cougars. Seniors Emily Danks and Mari Hole led the squad offensively, tallying 11 and 10 kills, respectively while junior Davionna DiSalvatore totaled 10 digs. Senior captain setter Amanda Peterson finished with 38 assists and added two service aces. The line-up and rotation seemed to go as expected with the extra wrinkle of freshman Jillian Bauer coming in to serve in a rotation with Mariah Booth.

Saturday morning, the Buckeyes picked up where they left off  be defeating the Toledo Rockets 3-0 (25-19, 25-20,  25-14). Senior Mari Hole led all players with 13 kills, and junior Kaitlyn Leary finished with 11. Davionna DiSalvatore had 11 digs and senior setter Amanda Peterson totaled 30 assists. The biggest news of the contest was senior Emily Danks, who recorded her 1000th career kill during the match. She is the 19th player to reach this milestone in Ohio State history.

The competition bar was raised in the evening match as #20 Oregon arrived having also won their previous two matches in 2012 Sports Import DC Koehl Classic.  Although OSU started by winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21, this may have been the wake-up call for the Ducks.  They started with a dominating 25-14 victory over the Bucks in the third set and battled in a closely played 4th set.  Ohio State managed to pull to a 24-24 tie before falling 26-24.  In the final set, the Bucks fell behind early and was never able to catchup finally losing the 5th and final set 15-10.

Emily Danks and Mari Hole were named to the All-Tournament team.

Final Tune-up Before Season Begins
August 21, 2012 9:30 pm EST
The women's volleyball team squared off against themselves in an intra-squad scrimmage tonight as they prepared for the season opener against Houston Friday night in the Sports Import DC Koehl Classic in St John Arena.

The team title is not that important since players switched jerseys between matches but 'officially' the Scarlet squads defeated the Gray 2-1 (25-15, 19-25, 15-12). I am sure there are a couple players in the locker afterwards with bragging rights of being on the winning team all three games.

The returning starters continued to look strong, but all the playing time allowed the newcomers to show their skills as well.  In particular, freshman Katie Mitchell who lead the team with 10 kills and freshman Andrea Kacsits who was clearly a vocal leader on the court.

The arena crowd which was a bit under arena capacity was treated to free pizza after the scrimmage. In planning your sports schedule next year, you might want to remember!

The Buckeyes basically start 2012 where they ended 2011.

The women's volleyball team finished ranked 23rd in last season's final poll and the initial AVCA Coaches poll finds them ranked 24th for this year's campaign.  This places them 7th among the Big Ten squads. For a complete list of the Top 25, click here.

Although OSU will miss outgoing seniors Sarah Mignin (LIB) and Kelli Barhorst (MB), the team will return Mari Hole (AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, All-Big Ten), Emily Danks (AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, All-Regional Tournament Team), Mariah Booth, and Amanda Peterson. - Gregg
