Odds 'n ends
- If Jim Tressel can win this Saturday, he will join Woody and Earl as the only OSU coaches to go 3-1 against Michigan.
- Michigan's defense is ranked 21st nationally, while our offense is ranked 108th (out of 118) - UGLY!
- Michigan's offense is ranked 29th nationally, while the OSU defense is ranked 33rd - a little better
- In the last 50 years, THE GAME's record is 24-24-2
- This year, Michigan is averaging 25 points per game on the road vs a whopping 41 points at home
- This is the 101st game in this rivalry
- Many of their fans are actually predicting a very close game, most feel there will NOT be a blow-out (hmmm)

Monday TBGUN WEEK, Nov. 15, 2004 4:49 PM

We will be having much more tomorrow. But today, we have some really good daily news links to start the week. And just to get the juices further flowing, we have links directly from Ann Arbor. Link
In looking at the TBGUN (U of M) program, you probably know they have only one loss this year, that was to Notre Dame (28-20) in an otherwise close game in South Bend. TBGUN does not, as one would suspect, have a lot of weaknesses. We think we have found a few and will post these later on this week.
One thing we do know for sure; in order for Ohio State to win this weekend, the crowd is going to have to be a factor the ENTIRE GAME. TBGUN has a lot of very talented but young players that have shown a tendency (as one might expect) to be rattled occasionally.

We will have a preview of Purdue's offense later. In the mean time, so many questions, so little time:
* Just HOW much will Kyle Orton play and how effective can he be with two hip injuries?
* How much will Justin Zwick play?
* Can we contain their great wide-out Stubblefield?
* Will Ginn, do it a'Ginn?
* How will our young offensive line play against their aggressive and sophisticated blitzes?
* Will we show any quick passing on our own offense?
* Can our offense keep THEIR offense on the bench?
* Will we be distracted due to MC again?
* How much will Pittman play?
The questions go on and on. Unfortunately, we won't know until about 6:30 PM this Saturday, but it does create a lot of interesting questions. More later tonight.

A Master of Disguises: Thoughts on the Purdue Defense
It seems Jim Tressel is at LEAST as concerned (if not more so) about the Purdue defense as he is about their offense. He feels their defense masks their real intentions very effectively. They also mix up their defensive calls. A quick review of their scores clearly reinforces the effectiveness of Purdue's defense;
Purdue likes to be aggressive with their blitzing. Illinois and Iowa took advantage of the over-pursuit. Quick passes, flanker screens, the TE and out-patterns can hurt this as well. Their front seven defensively are good and experienced. These guys will NOT be fooled easily. We will have to out-smart them when we are on offense.
When Jim Tressel describes their defense he sounds like he is describing ours from the last two years. He uses words and phrases like; "attack," "zone-blitzing," "disguised coverage's," "dropping DL back into pass protection," etc. For this reason, I think Jim Bollman, and how he prepares our young offensive lineman to handle this onslaught, may be the single biggest factor determining the outcome for Ohio State.
This game could easily mirror the game there two years ago, with the now famous, "Holy Buckeye" comment from Brent Musberger on Michael Jenkin's TD catch. By the way, for those who want to see and hear that play again, click here.
Finally, we are their next to last game. Their finale is against in-state rival Indiana. So they probably see us as their last great test. This Saturday is also senior day and a game that will make them bowl eligible if they win.
Tomorrow, a look at their offense. In the mean time, remember: TBGUN countdown!

For just a taste of what we will analyze this week regarding Purdue, yesterday against Iowa:
- Purdue had five turnovers throughout the game
- Brandon Kirsch, who will most likely play against Ohio State this weekend, threw three touchdown passes for Purdue. He fell apart at the seams in the fourth quarter with one fumble and throwing two interceptions, which completely ended Purdue's attempt to rally from a 17-point deficit.
- Kirsch was 25-of-42 for 280 yards, including a 10-yard TD pass to Taylor Stubblefield in the final minutes. Stubblefield finished with 15 catches for 153 yards.
- Purdue feels their special teams really let them down
- There is in-house fighting and disagreement with the media, but many feel/blame the Purdue offense for this late season collapse, essentially leaving their defense hanging out to dry.
- Both teams had no rushing TD's
- For Purdue, if you take away Stubblefield and Ingraham (both WR's) they would have almost no offensive firepower whatsoever.
- Brandon Kirsch HATES pressure
Well, it will be fairly interesting to see how this week develops. Joe Tiller is a pretty stand-up guy but we'll get no useful information from him this week.

Final Friday Night Thoughts
Here are some random, late night final thoughts regarding the MSU game tomorrow:
- The Ohio State defense needs to be particularly aware of a play MSU ran that killed the TBGUN defense; the delayed TB draw. As mentioned before, TBGUN were over-pursuing until late in the game. This is an excellent play choice when a defense does this. Hopefully Mark Snyder saw this on film and prepared our warriors accordingly.
- For whatever reason, MSU's replacement QB who will play against us tomorrow did not throw much deep. I don't know if he can't or it just wasn't called. Our DB's need to challenge their WR's on the first play.
- The MSU defense got burned repeatedly on deep passes. The DB's, while talented, are short, going about 5'10" and 5'9". This should be exploited; this is how TBGUN won the game.
- Finally, if it comes down to kicking, MSU is one team where we DO NOT have a massive advantage over because their kickers are good. Their senior kicker, Dave Rayner, should be NFL material, just like Nooge.
- MSU's special teams have hurt them on and off all year. Last week, it was the dagger to the heart.
- Both teams have an enormous amount on the line. For MSU, a loss virtually wipes them out. For Ohio State, a loss sets up a seriously tough final two games and puts a bowl game in harms way.
It is just my opinion, but playing on offense not to lose is probably the best way to lose for Ohio State. I don't want to be careless, but MSU can score. Our defense, while showing nice signs of coming alive, is anything but a shut-down defense yet.
Finally, I think the few keys for us will be:
- We MUST play aggressive defense and mix it up. Their back-up QB really didn't seem to handle pressure well.
- We hopefully prepared in a smart way. John L. Smith is a good coach, disguises his offense well, and makes adjustments during the game.
- We MUST have some grind-it-out drives on offense to set up some intermediate/long passing. I think going to our TE's early could help this as well as the run game. Roy Hall's height could come in very handy tomorrow.
- Team poise is a must. I think Troy Smith brings this to the table. We also DO NOT NEED to experiment with offensive line personnel package changes constantly unless someone is hurt. The package of Rehring, Sims, Datish, Mangold, Barton (in that order) seems the most productive combination yet.
Sit back, yell and enjoy the game. I think we will win if we can get some of the above done. Oh yeah, one last thing; lose the predictability in play selection and calling!

The following table tells an interesting tale about offense and this week's game against the Spartans. See why we think Snyder's defense is key? You can also conclude that unless we keep a lid on their offense, we'll have to open up our offense more than Tressel likes. Wouldn't that be novel?

I thought things would not heat up this week until Wednesday or so. WOW, am I wrong. Boards, radio shows and website about this week's game against Michigan State are already going nuts.
BOTH teams are saying this is a critical must-win game. There is so much drama going on relative to this game: Can Troy Smith show the same poise away from home? Will MSU be flat and out of gas after their loss in 3OT's? Will our defense be up to the test of their offense? The loser may be out of bowl contention. Will their TB Cobb run wild against us like he did against TBGUN? MSU hasn't beaten anybody of REAL significance this year (except Minn., which is "iffy" now)!
I had originally intended to post an analysis of MSU tonight, but may need to do more research! Stay tuned - this soap opera of a year is nowhere near over.

Superman in the Horsehoe
Yesterday, as always, Ohio State hosted a number of high school recruits. It is something that doesn't get much publicity. One of those in Columbus was Jason Gwaltney of Babylon, New York. Jason is one of the premier tailbacks in the country. He was just mildly interested (at best) coming into Ohio Stadium yesterday. Our sources learned that apparently he was just blown away with his trip and now has OSU at or near the top of his short list.
Jason's last game was almost super-human; 406 yards, 9 TD's on 29 carries. Yes, you read it correctly, LAST GAME. And, we understand he rested most of the fourth quarter in that game. Just one good game? How about, 5,112 yards 90 TD's and 546 points after his first three years. He is 5'11"/230lbs./4.52 40 speed. He intends to announce his school in January at the U.S. Army High School All-Star game. Think Scarlet and Gray, Jason!

General Ramblings From Today's Game
A friend at the game today asked me just how fast is Ginn?
I gave him his official 40 time and then realized that didn't really explain it. I then thought to myself that if you think of most really good athletes having at least 3 gears, Ted must have at least five. I also noticed he has started running better (but not yet great) pass routes. This is going to be some special kind of player for us.
I think I see improved play on the offensive line, except when Tim Shafer is in the rotation. Our total offensive output wasn't good by any stretch, but we were running the ball better (often with authority in the first half) against what has so far proven to be a good defensive unit against the run (Penn State).
Troy's fumble in my mind is excusable - someone didn't do their job protecting his backside.
It was good to see Maurice Hall set the kick-return record, have an excellent return, and generally run the ball well today. I thought Antonio Pittman looked good at times, but seemed tentative at other times. We need to remember he is just a freshman.
Finally, I think I see some improved play on the defense, both in the secondary and at the point of attack.
We'll have more tomorrow.

Which offensive line personnel package shows up this week? In case you didn't know it, we had an offensive line-up change in the early part of the game last week against Indiana. One which I think showed better chemistry and better results. This new package featured Rehring and several starters in different positions, including Sims at guard.
At the 7:42 second mark in the second quarter the coaches put in the same personnel package that had been used mostly during the first three Big Ten games. If my record keeping is correct, we not only didn't score but had little success moving the ball the rest of the quarter. Look for the offensive line package and line-up early in the game against Penn State. It could be an indicator for the future.

Also, the Buckeyes will host a high profile high school recruit this weekend; Jason Gwaltney from North Babylon HS in Babylon, New York. He is a four star RB prospect at 5'11"/235lbs./4.50 40. He is considered a soft verbal to West Virginia at this point. I have seen videos of him and he is probably the second most impressive high school TB I have seen this year behind Jonathan Stewart. Game Day
It is currently 61 degrees on campus with an expected high today in the mid 60's. There is good chance of rain, but that rain could hold up until after the game.
Ohio State is currently a 13 1/2 point favorite over Indiana, who like Ohio State, is looking for their first Big Ten win.
Buckeye captain Lydell Ross will not play today. Ross was suspended because of an incident at a local strip club. Police are investigating charges that Ross passed fake money at the club. This marks the second time in the Tressel era that a Buckeye captain has been suspended.
Quarterback Troy Smith will get his first collegiate start today with Justin Zwick ailing. There was talk earlier in the weak that Zwick would dress and be available Saturday, but it now looks doubtful that Zwick will play, even if Smith were injured. Todd Boeckman, who was originally expected to redshirt this year, likely is the #2 guy behind Smith right now.
There also could be a few other freshmen that see their first action today. Left tackle Steve Rehring may see playing time as could tailback Erik Haw. With the unexpected 3-game losing streak, it would not be shocking to see several changes in the two-deep today.
The Call
Ohio State's football team is a train wreck right now. Today is a big-day for Coach Tressel and this team. Losing to Indiana at home was unimaginable two-months ago, but now you have to wonder if this team has anything left. I think most Buckeye fans expect a win today, but I also think these same fans would not be shocked if Indiana came away with a win.
As always, the Buckeyes have to win the turnover battle, a battle that they have lost in most games this year. The defense has to play better and the offense has to find some way to move the football. Tony Pittman may have his coming out party today against an Indiana game that is giving up more than 30 points a game and over 200 yards a game on the ground.
Prediction: Ohio State 27 Indiana 17
